Pomegranate trees are native to Iran and regions through to the Himalayas, growing best in warm climates.
The flowers, which appear in summer, are usually bright scarlet but there are also white, pink and yellow forms, single and double. The round, leathery fruits are yellow, and contain black seeds surrounded by juicy, edible pulp.
