The Wild Black Cherry is the largest native American cherry and can grow up to 60 feet tall in nature. The beautiful fragrant flower show is attractive to songbirds and its autumn colours make it a highly desirable shade tree if you have the room.
The tree produces white flowers in late spring followed by small, edible, very sweet and aromatic fruits that are black when ripe in early summer. The fruits can be eaten raw or made into jams, juices, wine and jelly.
The bark is light to dark grey, developing scaly fissures with age. The wood is reddish brown, close grained and very hard. It is used for furniture, veneer, tool handles and has few rivals as a fine cabinet wood.
