The English Yew develops short, dark green needle-like foliage, neatly arranged on wide, spreading branches. The dark green top is contrasted with a tinged yellowish colour underneath.

The bark is grey-brown in colour which may peel off in strips to reveal a beautiful reddish underlayer. The wood is light red in colour, compact, fine-grained, and very elastic. They tend to become hollow when they grow old.
