The name Hornbeam is derived from the toughness of its wood, which is comparable to a ‘horn’, and the Old English word for tree, “beam.” This tree (Carpinus Betulus)
is an excellent choice for group or forest plantings, but also as an outdoor feature.

The European Hornbeam produces green catkins from late spring through summer, turning to clusters of winged fruit in autumn providing food for wildlife.

The textured foliage are dark green to begin with, before turning an attractive yellow in autumn. Similarly to other types of Hornbeam, the leaves are diagonally ridged and serrated that adds another dimension to this wonderful specimen.
