The Bodhi Tree can reach 30 meters high and its trunk can develop a diameter of up to 3 meters. It is a species of Ficus native to India, southwest of China and Indochina to the east of Vietnam.
The leaves are pinkish-red in colour, becoming dark green when ripe. The leaves are attached to long, flexible stems, making them twirl in the wind. The foliage is generally dense and has heart-shaped hanging leaves. The tree loses leaves for a short time in the dry season. The trunk has smooth, grey bark and becomes irregular with age. The tree will eventually produce aerial roots, which will touch the ground and penetrate it, thus forming a new trunk.
