The Firethorn tree is native to Southern Europe. The leaves are small, ovate, dark green and glossy and grow in clusters. These are followed by small white flowers in spring, and small, long-lasting, bright red to yellow fruits in autumn.
The leaves, fruit and seeds contain hydrogen cyanide and are therefore bitter and slightly poisonous for humans. They can be used safely to make jams and sauces.
