Japanese Maple

The Japanese Maple is well-known and popular for its very attractive yellow, orange and red autumn colours. These seeds produce a classic bonsai look which will fit into any garden beautifully.

Literally translated, Acer is “maple” and Palmatum “hand”, for the five-lobed leaves bearing a resemblance to the human hand. Japanese Maples have slender, arching branches which support an open canopy of delicate lobed leaves. The leaves on new shoots vary from yellow to orange-ish to red, with autumn colours equally as bright. Small yellowish flowers develop in late spring to early summer. The bark of young trees is green, red in some varieties, turning to a light grey or brown as the tree matures.

Japanese Elm

The Japanese Elm is incredibly popular for Bonsai, ideal due to the small size of their leaves and many appealing characteristics. This tree is excellent if you are looking to create a broom style Bonsai and is easy to care for.

They produce dark green ovate foliage throughout the summer, changing to yellow, orange, red and purple in autumn. The bark is grey and smooth, and the young shoots are reddish at first. The straight trunk and smooth bark of the Zelkova are appealing characteristics, maturing to grey in colour.

Japanese Quince

The Japanese Quince is prized for its large colourful blooms and elegant bonsai shapes. Chaenomeles Japonica is a mildly spiny, deciduous shrub with spreading branches that hold small leaves and masses of orange to deep red flowers, followed by attractive yellow plum-sized aromatic fruits. The Japanese Quince is a very popular species for Bonsai but also for jam making, as the fruits can be juiced after boiling.
